Determining how best to expense the cost of employee stock options is an important yet contentious issue. Opponents of expensing options are primarily concerned about the magnitude of the estimation error. Proponents, stock, state that less estimation error exists when allocating employee stock option costs than when estimating such expenses as warranties and other postretirement benefits. The options propose a fair-value expensing strategy to record and amortize employee stock option costs. The strategy simultaneously records a prepaid-compensation account value a paid-in capital stock option account for the same amount.
